Hallå där David Engström, du är adjunkt inom musik- och ljudproduktion samt programledare för Musikproduktionsprogrammet vid Musikhögskolan Ingesund som i år blivit utsett till Ableton Certified Training Center. Du är dessutom en så kallad Ableton Certified Trainer sen 2016. Vad innebär musikhögskolans samarbete med Ableton?
- För att kunna bli utsedd till Ableton Certified Trainer ska en visa upp omfattande kunskap i Abletons produkter, framförallt deras mjukvara Live, men ska också vara en mycket god pedagog och dessutom vara aktiv och kreativ musiker som parallellt med läraryrket gör spännande musik. Det går att söka certifiering på en rad platser runt om i världen. Jag genomförde min certifiering i Berlin och kom igenom nålsögat som den första i Sverige. Det känns väldigt bra eftersom Ableton är mycket selektiva. Jag tror att vi är cirka 350 personer med titeln Ableton Certified Trainer runt om i världen. I vissa länder är det fler, som Tyskland, Frankrike, USA och andra, men i många länder är vi få eller bara en. Jag är ensam i Sverige, vi har en i Norge, en i Finland, två i Danmark och ingen på Island som exempel.
Under 2020 har Musikhögskolan Ingesund också blivit utsett till ett Ableton Certified Training Center. Vilka kriterier krävs för att få en sådan certifiering och vad innebär det för Ingesund?
- Ja, inledningsvis måste lärosätet ha en lärare som tidigare är utsedd till Ableton Certified Trainer anställd vid lärosätet samt involverad i utformande av kurser. Vidare har Ableton tittat på kursplaner, vad kurserna har för innehåll, hur våra lokaler ser ut och hur vi använder deras utrustning, och genom certifieringen går de alltså i god för att de rekommenderar Musikhögskolan Ingesund att studera på. För skolan innebär det såklart en typ av kvalitétsstämpel, men det öppnar också möjligheter för bra kontaktytor med andra skolor och lärare i världen som har samma certifiering och också med Ableton själva.
Vad är det som gör Abletons mjukvara så bra och vad är det som skiljer från annan mjukvara?
- Det som skiljer Ableton Live, som deras mjukvara heter, från andra program för musikproduktion är att det är skapat från utgångspunkt av att göra datorn till ett musikinstrument och att ha kreativitet och experimenterande i fokus. Det skapades från början för att vara ett verktyg för att framföra elektronisk musik på scen, vilket det fortfarande är, men utvecklades snart till att vara ett fullskaligt program för musikproduktion. Detta gör att det är lite annorlunda upplagt än många andra program men jag tycker det är inbjudande att ”jamma” och experimentera i, och jag har upplevt det tacksamt att undervisa musikskapande med barn och unga i. Men som sagt, förutom musikproduktionen så är programmet även ett verktyg för musikaliska framträdanden på alla möjliga vis och har många kreativa möjligheter som är ganska unika.
Skulle du kunna göra en hel musikproduktion hemma i vardagsrummet med Abletons program?
- Absolut! Det är som sagt ett lika fullskaligt program för musikproduktion som andra kända som Logic, Cubase, Studio one, FL studio och andra. Men som sagt, samtidigt har de filosofin att göra datorn till ett musikinstrument i sig självt med alla möjligheter det ger.

Ingesund is an Ableton Certified Training Center
Hello, David Engström! You are a lecturer in Music and Sound Production and the programme coordinator for the Music Production programme at the Ingesund School of Music, which was authorised last year as an Ableton Certified Training Center. You yourself have also been a so-called Ableton Certified Trainer since 2016. What does collaboration with Ableton mean for the Ingesund School of Music?
- To be authorised as an Ableton Certified Trainer, you have to demonstrate broad knowledge of Ableton’s products, especially their Live software, but also be an excellent teacher and an active and creative musician who creates exciting music while working as a professional educator. You can apply for certification in a number of places around the world. I completed my certification in Berlin, and was the first one in Sweden to accomplish it. This feels really good, since Ableton is very selective. I believe there are around 350 of us around the world titled Ableton Certified Trainer. There are higher numbers in some countries, such as Germany, France, the U.S., and others, but in many countries there are few Ableton Certified Trainers or just one. I am the only one in Sweden, and there is one in Norway, one in Finland, two in Denmark, and none in Iceland, for example.
The Ingesund School of Music was also authorised as an Ableton Certified Training Center in 2020. What are the criteria for this certification, and what does it mean for Ingesund?
- Well, to begin with, the higher education institution must have a member of the teaching staff who has already been authorised as an Ableton Certified Trainer and who is involved in course development. In addition, Ableton has examined syllabuses, course content, our premises, and how we use their equipment, and through the certification they then endorse the Ingesund School of Music as a recommended higher education institution. For Ingesund, this is obviously a stamp of quality, but it also opens up opportunities for establishing valuable networks with other schools and teachers around the world who have the same certification, and good contacts with Ableton itself.
What is it that makes Ableton’s software so useful, and what makes it different from other types of software?
- What distinguishes Ableton Live, which is the name of their software, from other music production software is that it was created in order to turn the computer into a musical instrument, and to focus on creativity and experiment. It was originally developed as a tool for performing electronic music on stage, and it still is such a tool, but it was soon expanded into a full-scale music production software. This makes it a bit different from many other types of software in terms of structure, but I think it encourages users to “jam” and experiment, and I have found it advantageous for teaching music production to children and young people. But as I mentioned before, apart from music production, the software also constitutes a tool for musical performance in all kinds of ways and offers a range of creative possibilities that are rather unique.
Would you be able to accomplish an entire music production at home in your living room, using Ableton’s software?
- Absolutely! Like I said, it is a full-scale music production software just like other well-known types of software such as Logic, Cubase, Studio One, FL Studio, and others. But, again, the philosophy behind it is at the same time to turn the computer into a musical instrument in its own right and open up that potential.
