Hedvig Mårdh
Research
In my research I explore how cultural heritage comes into being – and how it is staged across different media. Through art, museum exhibitions, collecting practices, theatre and silent film, it reveals the narratives that shape our understanding of the past. Particular attention is given to the creative and often complex aspects of heritage processes and the ways in which they influence contemporary society.
Current and Completed Research Projects
2026–2028
“The Desire to Paint Can Never Be Taken from Me” – Ava de Lagercrantz and the Konradsberg Collection
Funded by the Berit Wallenberg Foundation. In collaboration with Nationalmuseum.
This project seeks to nuance the perception of patient art by examining the Konradsberg Collection and the development of the artist Ava Lagercrantz’s artistic practice before, during and after her time at Stockholm Hospital. The aim is to understand the works as part of a life’s oeuvre and to contribute to a deeper understanding of patient art within Swedish art history.
2023–2025
Patient Art as a Material Category in Archives and Collections
Funded by the Ingvar Andersson Foundation (National Archives), in collaboration with Thérèse Toudert and the Medical History Museum.
The project investigates patient art in medical-historical collections, archives and art collections, focusing on preservation, categorisation and future modes of display.
2020–2024
The Gustavian Memory
In collaboration with Alfred Sjödin (Karlstad University) and Johannes Heuman (Södertörn University), funded by the Birgit and Gad Rausing Foundation for Humanistic Research and the Sven and Dagmar Salén Foundation for Science and Culture.
The project analyses how the Gustavian period and style has been staged and renegotiated in different historical contexts.
2017–2023
Ulleråker - funktionsnedsättning och kulturarv (2017-2019) Research and Development was a project funded by the Swedish National Heritage Board. The purpose of the project was to examine how Ulleråker’s former psychiatric hospital, understood as a complex cultural heritage, is presented and managed in urban development and heritage processes.
From Psychiatric Hospital to Condominium – Urban Development and Cultural Heritage
A Formas-funded project on heritage processes in urban planning, in collaboration with Cecilia Rodéhn. The publication Komplext kulturarv (Complex Heritage – From Psychiatric Hospital to Residential Area) (2021) presents parts of the research and is available for download via DiVA.
2017
Doctoral Thesis: A Century of Swedish Gustavian Style: Art History, Cultural Heritage and Neoclassical Revivals from the 1890s to the 1990s
The study demonstrates how scholars, art historians, commercial enterprises, historical societies and museums have constructed narratives around the Gustavian style and how these have contributed to its perceived relevance in a changing society. The thesis discusses style in relation to aesthetics, national identity and ideas of taste and class, spanning the period from the 1890s to the present day.
Teaching
In addition to research, I teach and coordinate courses in Cultural Studies and Art and Visual Studies, with a focus on cultural heritage, art history and visual culture. My teaching aims to connect theoretical perspectives with practical approaches to heritage and visual analysis, encouraging students to critically engage with how cultural narratives are constructed and mediated.
I currently serve as Director of Studies for the Cultural Studies Programme, where I am responsible for quality assurance and pedagogical planning.
