Annual report 2024
2024 was a busy year for the Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research (SMEER) research center. During this period, SMEER researchers were active at five different university departments, creating many opportunities for collaboration, both internally and externally. Research has been conducted based on a research program for 2023-2025 that focuses on four areas: practice-based teaching research, subject didactic theory and concept development, representations and language use, and teaching for sustainable development and the Anthropocene.
An external quality evaluation was conducted in 2023, which provided positive feedback but also identified strategic development opportunities. Based on this evaluation, SMEER has focused on three priority areas in 2024: developing a publishing strategy, ensuring the participation of SMEER researchers in the recruitment of new subject didacticists, and initiating career development opportunities for subject didacticists. SMEER has also worked on developing a new research program for 2026-2029, drawing inspiration from various studies and research proposals. The "Lilla SMEER" network for doctoral students has continued its work, contributing to improvements in the research environment and doctoral education.
SMEER researchers have taken on a significant role in teacher training and have collaborated actively with various societal actors. The new master's program in subject didactics has continued to develop, and SMEER researchers have been active in both planning and implementation. Several large research projects have been ongoing throughout the year, funded by various research councils and institutes. In summary, SMEER has conducted nationally and internationally recognized research relevant to schools and teacher education in 2024. The research center has grown and recruited new researchers, but faces challenges in finding new hires with extensive research experience. An important issue for the future is how SMEER can maintain and develop its research environment. It is also important to ensure a high level of external financing.
