Research
Mersiha Velic is a PhD student at Karlstad University in the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology, Department of Health Sciences/Oral Health. She has published research on, among other things, patient experiences and communication in dentistry. In her PhD project, she will shift focus and explore factors that prevent early childhood caries (ECC) among children living in vulnerable areas with a lower-than-average socioeconomic standard in Värmland, Sweden. Despite the relatively higher prevalence of ECC in these areas, some children remain caries-free and Mersiha wants to work out what keeps their teeth healthy. Her research aims to explore oral health behaviors, family dynamics and resilience factors as these protective factors. The results will contribute to develop improved oral health promotion strategies.
