Dionysia Bakogianni
Research
My research addresses the transformation of education in the age of data and artificial intelligence. Situated within sociocultural and activity-theoretical traditions, I examine how educational systems respond to emerging epistemic infrastructures and how teachers, teacher educators and academic staff renegotiate professional practice in digitally mediated environments. I lead and contribute to international research initiatives that develop conceptual, curricular, and methodological frameworks for integrating data science into school and teacher education programs, for understanding generative AI as a systemic force in higher education, as well as for supporting sustainable professional learning through resource-oriented approaches. This work combines empirical investigation with theoretical development and is grounded in large-scale European collaboration. My research advances scholarship on data literacy, civic engagement, and digital responsibility, positioning teacher education as a strategic site for educational change. By bridging classroom practice, teacher education, and higher education reform, I contribute to the international research agenda on the societal, epistemic, and institutional implications of AI and data-driven educational practices.
Collaboration
Research projects
Currently involved in the Erasmus+ projects DataScEd4CiEn (https://datasc4ed.euc.ac.cy) and DataSETUP (https://datasetup.euc.ac.cy), focusing on data science education, STEAM education, civic engagement, responsible AI, and teacher education. Serving as Leader of the Research & Evaluation Work Package and member of the Scientific Teams.
Previous participation in European funded projects includes LESSAM (https://www.ucy.ac.cy/lessam/), FORMAS, and Mascil (https://simplexportal.ro/mascil-project.ro/index.html), with a focus on mathematics education, formative assessment, inquiry-based learning, and teacher professional development through lesson study.
