Words from senior management: Strategy 2040 shaped together
2026-10-12We are currently in the midst of developing a new strategy looking ahead to 2040. From the outset, the assignment from the University Board has been clear: the strategy should not primarily describe activities that are part of the University's core mission, but rather set out a clear direction for how we want to develop and the position we aspire to hold in the future.
Looking 15 years ahead is, of course, a challenge. No one knows exactly what the world will look like in 2040. In particular, developments in recent years have shown us that technological shifts, geopolitical changes and emerging societal challenges will affect us in ways that are difficult to predict. For that reason, this work is not about forecasting the future, but about building an organisation, a culture, or, if you like, a mindset that gives us the capacity to respond effectively to a range of possible futures.
During the spring, we held extensive discussions with the Faculty Boards, management teams, the Professorial Board, the Student Union, and representatives from municipalities and regional authorities. The aim was to gather views on the strategic shifts identified by the Board, while also considering alternative perspectives.
These discussions reveal broad support for strengthening the University's research profiling and internationalisation. At the same time, the message is clear: development must build on our existing strengths. Karlstad University should continue to be characterised by close collaboration with the wider community, strong professional degree programmes, and a clear regional presence.
Many view internationalisation as an important means rather than an end in itself. International students and researchers contribute to quality, bring new perspectives, and strengthen academic environments. Likewise, research profiling needs to be based on a long-term approach, clear criteria, and favourable conditions that allow strengths to develop organically within the organisation.
The working group and reference group have compiled a concise strategy document describing what Karlstad University should be in 2040. The document has been circulated for consultation to the faculties, the Board for Teacher Education (LUN), and central support functions. It will be considered at the University Board meeting on 24 November, with the aim of adopting the strategy at the Board meeting in February 2027.
