Students recognized for outstanding achievements in a software project
2026-02-04A number of computer science students have been recognized for their outstanding project work in the Software Engineering course. Two project works were recognized with diplomas: one for “best project work” and one for “best UX design”.
The goal of the project was to develop a web-based tool for event planning and communication. This tool will facilitate the management of both internal and external events and communicate news, etc.
Dr. Jonathan Vestin, Associate Professor of Computer Science, developed the requirements specification and acted as the end customer: "It was impressive to see such a professional app developed by the students within a limited time frame. They not only met the most important requirements but also showed empathetic and innovative thinking."
Caj Rollny, a teacher in Computer Science, acted as the customer's project manager and led the Scrum meetings with the project groups:
"Successfully achieving this result in only 6 weeks is very impressive. The quality was high in all parts; the implementation of the project methodology (Scrum), the dialogue with the "customer" and the design and functionality of the applications. These two student groups excelled in a very positive way"
Dr. Muhammad Ovais Ahmad, Associate Professor of Computer Science, is the course responsible:
“The Software Engineering course is designed to provide a deep understanding of agile development processes, design patterns, code quality, testing, effective communication, and collaboration in diverse team environments. The course’s focus on both technical expertise and comprehensive agile project management principles creates a collaborative and innovative learning environment. Students are challenged not only to acquire technical skills, but also to develop a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of software projects. This holistic approach prepares our graduates well to excel in diverse software development environments.
The Software Engineering course, offered by the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, exemplifies the department’s commitment to providing students with a comprehensive education that is aligned with industry needs and promotes lifelong learning. This exemplary story serves as an inspiration for future generations of software engineers and confirms Karlstad University’s position in STEM education." he says
