Prima Gustiené, newly appointed docent in Information Systems
2018-11-21Congratulations! How do you feel about the appointment?
- It feels great! I am both happy and proud. I am so pleased that my work as a researcher and teacher were evaluated and found to reach docent standard. I feel it's an important step in my career.
You have a doctor's degree in Information Systems. What is your research field?
- My research work is mainly conducted in the area of Information Systems Development. An information system is a system that collect, stores, processes and transforms information. Information systems are developed to support information exchange in organization for improving effectiveness and efficiency of the organization. Information system development is the way in which information systems are conceived, analysed, designed and implemented. My research interests lie in the area of Conceptual and Enterprise Modelling, graphical representation of e-Business processes, Service modelling, where the focus is on pragmatic and semantic aspects of information systems.
My main scientific contribution is the development of a new modelling method for Information Systems Analysis and Design. This method provides the foundation for graphical analysis and design that enables reasoning about system architecture across organizational and technical system boundaries. The method supports a systematic way of modelling starting from a business-oriented analysis to a semantic level where the integration of static and dynamic aspects of the system is performed. The method contributes to a better communication among different stakeholders involved in information system development process. The philosophy of my research is much based on thinking how much semantic power has different modeling approaches to support communication and learning. This is very important from pedagogical perspective in both teaching as well as communicating with different stakeholders involved in system development process.
The appointment to docent is a sign of an academic competence within a discipline and combines both research and teaching skills. How do you connect to research issues when teaching students?
- As a researcher, I always try to transfer knowledge from my research to teaching activities. As my research, and courses I teach, concern Information System development, I link my research issues to course material trying to explain and motivate why we need new methods and models in development. What are the problems with traditional Information System development methods and models that we use now? In some courses, students read our scientific articles and do some practical tasks using a new modelling method. This way of teaching provides possibilities for the students to do the comparison of methods themselves and increase their own understanding of suitability of methods.
