New book on children's needs and parenting
2025-09-03Kjerstin Almqvist is one of the authors of the new book Attachment in Social Work: On Parenting Capacity and Children's Needs which is based on several years of research and practical experience from social services.
The book provides an introduction to attachment theory and explains how children form emotional bonds with their caregivers – bonds that influence their development, sense of security, and relationships later in life. It also explores how attachment evolves over time and how the theory can be applied in practice, for example, in custody cases, placements, and support interventions.
“The book consists of two parts. The first offers an updated introduction to attachment theory based on current research. This section is useful for anyone interested in the topic, not just social workers and others working with children in vulnerable situations –who are the book’s primary target group,” says Kjerstin Almqvist, senior professor of psychology.
The second part focuses on practical applications, such as custody disputes, situations where parents face significant challenges, or when a child’s circumstances need to be assessed. It also includes chapters on conversations with children and how attachment should be considered in child welfare investigations and potential interventions, such as foster care placements.
Practical and research-based guidance
Kjerstin Almqvist has collaborated with social services in various municipalities through several research projects, gaining insight into their challenges.
“Many social workers have asked for guidance on how to think about parental capacity and children's needs, especially in cases involving domestic violence and other difficult situations,” says Almqvist. “It has become clear that there is a need for a book focusing on children's attachment and parents’ ability to meet their needs. My co-author Anders Broberg has had similar experiences, particularly in work with children in foster care. Pia Svensson, also a co-author, has extensive experience in social services and contributed with her practical expertise.”
The book is aimed at students in social work programmes as well as professionals working in social services and the legal system.
Kjerstin Almqvist is a licensed psychologist, licensed psychotherapist, and senior professor of psychology at Karlstad University. Her research has primarily focused on children in vulnerable situations – their reactions and the types of support that can help them.
