Interview with Mas Karin Gustafsson
The University Library is an important hub at our institution. It’s where students, researchers and lecturers meet – and receive support from skilled librarians! Mas Karin Gustafsson is one of the dedicated individuals who help generate new knowledge.
Mas Karin Gustafsson has worked as a librarian at the University Library since 2022. What drew her to apply for the position was the opportunity to be part of a place where new knowledge is both created and shared. Previously, she worked in various public libraries and didn’t know much about how the librarian role differs between different types of libraries. She explains:
– I was a little nervous about working in academia, but I immediately felt that this is such an open and welcoming environment that the nervousness quickly disappeared! You feel part of a bigger world, both nationally and internationally, and that’s so stimulating!
Karin felt welcome from day one, and her timing was perfect as it coincided with the central introduction day for new employees. During this day, you get an overview of the organisation, learn about benefits and opportunities, and meet representatives from management and support functions.
– It was great to immediately get to know other new colleagues from different departments and roles. In my daily work, I interact with lots of different people – not just students or my closest colleagues, says Karin.
The team and the department
At the library, staff work in different teams, and Karin is part of the team responsible for teaching academic information literacy to students. Every Monday, the team meets to review the week’s activities, and they stay in close contact in between. Another much-appreciated day is Friday, when all teams within the library department gather for a shared coffee break.
– We have a lovely tradition of solving the Dagens Nyheter (the largest morning newspaper in Sweden) Friday crossword together – something I really look forward to during the week! We also have a Friday seminar straight after coffee, where we take turns sharing insights, trends and other useful information worth spreading to everyone, says Karin.
The social world of Kau
Beyond the daily work at the university, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved or take part in different activities if you wish. Karin is a member of the Art Association, which organises museum visits and an annual art lottery. She is also the library’s representative in the Culture at Kau group, which promotes cultural experiences of various kinds for both students and staff. For internal cohesion, it’s important to create opportunities to meet beyond formal occasions.
– Our big staff parties for the whole university are great fun. You can really tell people appreciate having a good time together, says Karin. I also value the inspiration and training day organised for everyone in the central support functions.
So what would Karin say to someone considering applying for a job at the university?
– Don’t hesitate – apply! You get to help other people, and there are so many opportunities to develop within the areas of knowledge and expertise you’re passionate about.
