Research and development work at the department for artistic studies (IKS)
IKS CONDUCTS ARTISTIC AND MUSIC EDUCATION RESEARCH
Artistic research is carried out within visual arts and music performance. Research in music education includes studies on various practices that involve learning and teaching in music. IKS has a multidisciplinary environment, where researchers and teachers collaborate on artistic and educational problem areas. The research is both philosophy- and practice-oriented, within formal education as well as various cultural practices in the surrounding society. The research is simultaneously innovative and theory-generating. Research projects are carried out both individually and in collaboration, within the department and in collaboration with other institutions, nationally and internationally.
Research in visual arts and music performance has an artistic basis while research in music education has a scientific basis. Nevertheless, the fields are closely connected and interact in various ways in the research activity carried out at IKS, through intersections in the study of performance, creative processes, learning and teaching in different forms and contexts. Central to the research in both areas are an exploratory approach, reflection and a strive towards the development of new knowledge.
Thus, the research environment at IKS creates opportunities for trans- and multidisciplinary projects and is organised through Forskarklustret för lärande och gestaltning i konstnärliga ämnen (The Research Cluster for music education and artistic research).
THE OBJECTIVES FOR THE RESEARCH CLUSTER ARE TO
- develop the research environment at IKS
- create dialogue and mutual exchanges between the artistically and scientifically based disciplines, to develop new knowledge
- stimulate artistic and educational research across subject boundaries
- develop collaboration with researchers in other departments and universities
- carry out research seminars for shared discussions of applications, publications, ideas for research, et cetera
- carry out research seminars open to students and teachers
- involve students and teachers in ongoing research when possible and relevant
- stimulate development work at IKS within both fields
- enhance the quality of students’ independent work (final research project exam)
