Meet Nina Christenson – New Head of Department at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences
2026-06-15On 1 July, Nina Christenson will assume the role of Head of Department at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at Karlstad University. With extensive experience in research, education and academic leadership, she looks forward to continuing the department’s development together with colleagues.
“It feels both exciting and inspiring, and I am very much looking forward to contributing to the continued development of the department,” says Nina Christenson.
Nina Christenson is a Senior Lecturer in Biology with a specialisation in science education and an Associate Professor (Docent) in Science Education. Her research focuses on areas including climate change, societal risks, and education for action competence. Throughout her years at Karlstad University, she has also held several positions related to education, research and leadership.
Accepting the role as Head of Department felt like a natural next step, she explains.
“The department is very well-functioning, and there is a strong sense of collegiality here. I truly value the commitment and positive atmosphere.”
In her new role, she is particularly looking forward to creating favourable conditions for both research and education.
“I enjoy building relationships and supporting development processes. Together, we can continue strengthening our research and educational environments.”
She also highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy work environment and further developing collaborations, both within the department and internationally.
As a leader, Nina Christenson describes herself as relationship-oriented and trust-based.
“I hope that both staff and students experience me as approachable, attentive and engaged.”
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time in nature, preferably skiing or running. And there is one thing not everyone may know about her:
“I can be quite competitive – even when it is just for fun.”
