Doctoral education
At Karlstad University, you can study history at doctoral level.
History is the science of human and society through the centuries. Empirical analysis and awareness of sources is at the core of the study of continuity and change at local, national, and international levels. Historical knowledge and insight into the methodological particularity of historical science is central to our understanding of the present. In the study plan for the doctoral level we focus on history as a critical science of the humanities, with an research emphasis on modern and early modern history. Through seminars, courses, and participation in conferences, the chronological and thematic scope is widened, and allows for dialogue with other groups, both nationally and internationally. The staff includes researchers and supervisors with expertise in, for instance, social and political history, cultural and gender history, history of education and history didactics, with associated theoretical and methodological specialisations. We cooperate with the historical institutions at Linköping University and Gothenburg University, and offer doctoral courses and seminars together with them. Depending on the thesis, it is also possible for our doctoral students to take theoretical and methodological specialisation courses that are offered by the faculty for the humanities and social sciences.
