History
Welcome to the subject of History at Karlstad University! We are part of the Department of Political, Historical, Religious, and Cultural Studies.
Are you curious about history? Would you like to understand how today’s society was formed or how your ancestors lived? If you are, you can take one of the History courses at Karlstad University. History has been offered as an academic subject in Karlstad since 1967. We also contribute significantly to History Education in Sweden. Courses are currently offered up to doctoral level, and at bachelor’s level you may also take distance education courses in History. Karlstad and Värmland have excellent archival resources, which means that students in the subject have the opportunity to pursue exciting and valuable research projects.
Studying History in Karlstad
You can study History in subject courses and combine those courses with courses in other subjects to complete a Bachelor’s degree. However, most of the students who take History at Karlstad University do so as part of one of the degree programmes the university offers, such as the Secondary Education Programme or the Primary Education Programme. You can also study History to obtain a master’s degree. There are opportunities for international study exchange placements, as well as interaction with the Research Centres CRS (Centre for Regional Studies) and CSD (Centre for Social Science Education). We also offer courses in archival science.
