Students studying on the Master programme in information systems at Karlstad Business School may now receive two-degree certificates, whilst only studying one degree programme, announces Dr Ala Sarah Alaqra, associate professor in information systems at Karlstad Business School.
Through the new double degree programme, being launched August 2026, students complete their first year of studies at Karlstad University and then spend their second year at our partner university, the University of Vaasa, Finland.
The second year also includes thesis work, which is completed at the University of Vaasa. During the thesis process, students are supervised by a main supervisor at Vaasa while also having a co-supervisor from Karlstad to ensure that the thesis fulfils the academic standards and requirements of both institutions. After successfully completing the programme requirements, students receive degrees from both universities. Students may also access Erasmus+ scholarship funding to support their second year of studies at the University of Vaasa.
In what way is this a good opportunity for our students?
– This is an excellent opportunity for students because they can obtain two master degrees through one study programme, which is highly attractive in today’s international job market, says Ala Sarah Alaqra, programme leader for the Master programme in information systems.
In addition, students gain valuable international experience by being exposed to two different university environments, teaching approaches, and academic cultures. The double degree programme also allows students to expand their professional and academic networks by interacting with a broader range of researchers, academics and fellow students.

It creates more opportunities for academic exchange, joint supervision, and broader thesis and applied research topics for the students. The collaboration also increases the international profile and attractiveness of the programme while giving students access to a wider range of courses, perspectives and research environments.
