Agreement signed with Github2019-10-25
Karlstad Business School has signed a partnership agreement with Github – an online Community and subsidiary of Microsoft – to offer students and teaching staff the opportunity to cooperate and contribute to different IT projects without cost.
Revision control of source code is very important in all development and management of systems. GIT is a system for revision control developed by the Linux creator Linus Torvalds.
”Business School has signed a partnership agreement with Github. The agreement offers all subjects and departments at Karlstad University the chance to use all Github’s services without charge. At the Github web hotel there are thousands of interesting projects and the service is used by very many companies for code-hosting, release management and bug fixing. Because it is an online community, it's a good system to use if there are several developers in the same project, but also for one's own project. It's also a very good way to share source codes or other types of revisions," says Benneth Christiansson, senior lecturer in information systems, and in charge of the cooperation with Github.
Labour market needs
In Information Systems at the Business School, there is an ongoing strategic project to support students' preparation for their future careers. GIT is a component at several levels of their studies. Katarina Groth Jansson is director of studies and in charge of the implementation of the system.
"In my conversations with the Snits companies (the network for cooperation between students and regional IT companies), the question why students don't learn revision control often crops up and also from students in connection with their practical placement. Some student groups have used Github in their third year, but we would like to introduce it earlier and to more student groups. The first step was in-house training for staff teaching programming courses. We have also gone through our course offering to see in which course we could introduce, deepen and perhaps examine students in this at a later stage."
Thanks to our partnership agreement, all students at Karlstad University who register with Github have free access to Github Student Developer Pack, which for instance offers free domain names and free cloud instances in both Azure and AWS for a limited period, and an additional 50-ish services.
"Anyone who has a question or is interested in starting to use Guthub in their teaching are welcome to contact me," says Benneth Christiansson.
