Karlstads universitets Innovation AB

The mission of Karlstads universitets Innovation AB is to act as one of several tools supporting Karlstad University’s task and responsibility to make research and knowledge useful. This is achieved by supporting, inspiring, and driving activities within the university, or activities connected to the university, that can be turned into practical applications. For example, through business projects, licensing deals, product or service companies, and other related activities.

The company may also engage in consulting, management, and evaluation of patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights, as well as related tasks including business operations. Where appropriate, the company shall represent Karlstad University in the surrounding innovation ecosystem, both regionally, nationally, and internationally. Karlstads universitets Innovation AB was established in 2018.

Karlstads universitets Innovation AB is responsible, among other things, for:

• National verification funds and programs for Karlstad University and the Innovation Office Fyrklövern. Read more here.
• Responsibility for so-called idea banks at Karlstad University based on the regulation on state support for idea banks within holding companies at universities and university colleges (SFS 2022:1390). An “idea bank” refers to activities within holding companies at Swedish higher education institutions aimed at preserving research results that researchers themselves do not take forward for commercialization. • Responsibility for promoting the commercialization of research results and innovations in accordance with regulation (SFS 2025:727).
• Acting as IPR owner and contractual party for both Karlstad University and, when necessary, for individual researchers (at Karlstad University).
