Sports science is also responsible for Karlstad University’s elite sports initiative, Elitidrottsuniversitet (KAUEIU), which is organised in partnership with Karlstad municipality. KAUEIU gives students enrolled at Karlstad University the opportunity to combine their studies with participating in sports on elite (national) level.
Since January 2011, Karlstad University has offered potential elite sports students special support in their studies.
A nominations group comprising the head of the Department of Health Sciences, subject directors and coordinators have to ensure that students fulfil eligibility requirements (compete on national level) and rank applicants according to objective, non-discriminatory criteria. Formal decisions are taken by the head of the department. If all places are not filled by students admitted because of their sporting merits, the remaining places cannot be allocated to students who do not fulfil the eligibility requirements. There are 25 places available, and 15 of these are dedicated to track and field athletes, provided they fulfil the eligibility requirements.
The following support is offered:
· Moving of exam dates
· Individual supervision
· Approving leave for training camps and competitions
· Prioritising practical placements in the Karlstad area
