Scholarship through WISE

Are you interested in research, materials science and sustainability? Through the WISE Research Master Thesis programme, you have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship for your degree project at Karlstad University.

Karlstad University can award up to four scholarships per academic year, each valued at SEK 75,000. The scholarship is intended for students undertaking a research-related degree project within the framework of WISE (Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability).

The programme is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and aims to inspire more students to pursue doctoral studies in materials science for sustainability.

Who can apply?

The scholarship is aimed at students who are expected to be eligible to carry out a degree project during the academic year 2026/2027 and who are enrolled in one of the following MSc in Engineering programmes:

  • Engineering Physics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Energy and Environmental Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering

Alternatively, students in their second year of one of the following Master’s programmes are also eligible:

  • Master’s Programme in Physics – specialisation in Nanomaterials
  • Master’s Programme in Mechanical Engineering – specialisation in Data-Driven Mechanical Engineering

  3. Please indicate in your application which thesis project you are interested in.

Your application should include:

  • Your academic results to date, including an official transcript from Ladok
  • A personal statement explaining your motivation and why the initiative and the proposed project are of interest to you
  • A statement from the potential supervisor supporting the application.
  • You may also apply with an alternative project that is not listed here, but in that case a project title and brief abstract should also be included.

How are candidates selected?

All applications are reviewed by an assessment panel, which proposes scholarship recipients. The final decision is then made by the Faculty Dean.

The selection is based primarily on your academic performance, as well as your interest in and suitability for a research-oriented degree project.

Payment of the scholarship

The scholarship of SEK 75,000 is paid in two instalments:

  • SEK 25,000 when approximately 30% of the degree project has been completed
  • SEK 50,000 after the degree project has been completed

Payment is made via the Faculty to the bank account you provide.
