30.0 ECTS creditsModule 1. Social science methods and current civics education research (7.5 ECTS cr)
The module comprises the following components:
- central concepts and methods of importance to a source critical approach are studied and trained
- central concepts and methods with relevance to validity, reliability and analysis in the social sciences are studied and trained
- current social science education research is presented and analysed
- their own teaching is related to and problematised on the basis of current social science education research
- current research on grading and assessing in the school subject civics is presented and problematised
Module 2. Independent academic writing (7.5 ECTS cr)
The module comprises the following components:
- academic writing comprises individual formulation of topic and aim, methodological choice and delimitations, collection and compilation of their own material, and presentation of the investigation in writing
- the academic text is presented with a logical and pedagogical structure using standard techniques for reporting and referencing
- supervision on choice of subjects and other parts of the investigation and writing process
- a final seminar at which students present their text, discuss other texts and reviews one text.
- students have the opportunity to pursue field studies in Kenya.
Module 3. Teaching Civics in theory and practice (7.5 ECTS cr)
The module comprises the following components:
- posing questions on actual teaching and answering them on the basis of their own experience and current research
- central curricula and local pedagogical planning are applied in planning their own teaching
- theories on teaching and subject knowledge are applied in the planning of teaching
- reflecting on the relation between theory and practice in civics teaching
- digital teaching resources are used as a means in planning teachig and in the course communication
- discussing and reflecting on the profession and professional development
Module 4. Participatory citizenship (7.5 ECTS cr)
The module comprises the following components:
- an international perspective on education and teaching is introduced and implemented in the description of other countries' civics education
- participation in the national and international community is described and problematised at the levels of the individual and society of which also an actor and structure perspective is presented
- students' accumulated subject and teaching experiences and skills are related to the concept of society and current social science and civics education research
- an international perspective is related to subject-specific teaching methodology through examples and applications.
