Teacher Education: Swedish
30.0 ECTS creditsThe course consists of two modules.
Module 1: The text-producing human, 15 ECTS cr.
The module mixes the genre of fiction with contemporary text types such as rock lyrics, film, and other expressions of popular culture. Texts central to different youth cultures are emphasized. The teaching is organized according to genre and theme. The student will acquire the tools needed to analyze and interpret both fiction and other text types. Literary and cultural approaches to these texts are problematized theoretically and practically. The module includes two weeks of Experiential Studies at a Partner School.
Module 2: The development of children's and adolescents' language and reading skills, 15 ECTS cr.
The development of children's and adolescents' language repertoires are studied in Module 2. Special attention is given to how the language development and learning of the individual is influenced by the unequal opportunities for language interaction provided in a multicultural society. The different social preconditions, as well as differences in gender and ethnicity are problematized.
The different conditions under which children and adolescents learn to read, write and speak are studied, as well as central theories about language development, different language competences, and how children learn to write and read. The students are given the opportunity to apply and critically evaluate some of the central concepts in their own writing.
Through interviews and talks with teachers and pupils the students are also able to study how different theories are experienced and applied, and how central theories on language development, reading and writing can be used in the classroom.
The teaching is in the form of lectures, practical and theoretical seminars, literature study, and group-work. Each student is member of a study group (with and without supervision) that functions as a forum for discussion, the problematization of teaching materials, and the analysis of texts. The module includes continuous writing in different forms, such as process diaries and reading diaries. Being an effective means of working with, and reflecting on the issues of the course, writing becomes an important part of the students' acquisition of knowledge. It is also a preparation for later exam writing. Participation in the practical seminars is obligatory.
