English for Teaching in Primary Education: Pre-School and Years 1-3
15.0 ECTS creditsThe course introduces English studies and language acquisition in theory and practice through two modules:
Module 1 The Sounds and Syntax of English, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module is an introduction to the basic linguistic structures and formal description of English and covers the following components:
- important aspects of English phonology
- pronunciation and phonetic trascription exercises
- common pronunciation problems and their remedies
- basic grammatical concepts and English syntax
- grammar exercises
- oral and written proficiency exercises
Module 2 Language Acquisition in Theory and Practice, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module deals with different aspects of language acquisition in theory and practice and covers the following components:
- the principals ideas and assumptions of some major language learning theories and their relation to national curricular goals,
- methods of transforming knowledge into varied and inspiring teaching on the basis of aesthetic and playful modes,
- methods of monitoring and evaluating young children's language development and planning their continued progress,
- different types of texts, e.g. children's literature and other media suitable for stimulating children's language development as well as the students own learning,
- glances into everyday cultural phenomena in English-speaking environments, and
- transforming this knowledge into possible teaching activities with the help of ICT.

LPGG01, LPGG02 and LPGG04 completed
Selection:
Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
