Visual Narrative: Comics, Illustrations and Visualized Ideas
30.0 ECTS creditsThe course comprises four modules and includes practical as well as theoretical components. Students practise sketching techniques and image production in a laboratory study setting.
Module 1
Introduction to art and visual culture, 7.5 ECTS cr.
The module introduces the historical, social and aesthetic forms of representation in visual narratives with an emphasis on illustration, sketching and drawing techniques. Students develop skills in text and image production in studios and workshops.
Module 2
Illustration and visualisation, 7.5 ECTS cr.
The module includes thematic studies of aesthetic and peceptual expression in visual narratives and functional visualisation, as well as exercises and laborative visualisation in various materials and techniques with an emphasis on images and informative illustrations.
Module 3
The narrative technique of the comic medium, 7.5 ECTS cr.
Students develop their skills in analysing and producing different comic strips and narrative techniques, and study the history of visual narratives. Students produce their own comics applying the narrative and visual potentials of the medium.
Module 4
Image analysis 7.5 ECTS cr.
The module offers analysis exercises of different media, techniques and materials individually and in groups. The analysis exercises are carried out orally, in writing and through image production.
Instruction is in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops, studio work, and study visits.
