Swedish Economic History
7.5 ECTS creditsThe course provides a basic understanding of how Sweden changed from being a poor country to one of the richest countries in the world, with a focus on industrialisation and the expansion of the welfare state. Sweden used to be seen internationally as a model country in some ways. What enabled this transformation? Was this an exception in a longer period of history? The focus of the course, then, is economic and historical development in Sweden in the twentieth century, specifically regarding the labour market, the social security system, and welfare and housing policy, as well as education policy and industrial progress. The developments in Sweden are also related to a Western European perspective on economic history from the eighteenth century onwards.
