Sweden's higher education system
Trying to understand Sweden's higher education system can seem daunting at first. The following pages contain some basic information that foreign students don't automatically know.
Higher education in Sweden is subdivided into three levels. As a foreign student, different options are open to you depending on the degree level you would like to study at: bachelor (1st cycle), master (2nd cycle) or doctoral (3rd cycle).
Another decision is what language you would like to study in. Most likely you will choose one of our master's programmes or courses instructed in English. But if your Swedish is fluent, Swedish programmes and courses are open to you as well, giving you even greater choice.
At the national level, the Swedish Council for Higher Education, located in Stockholm, is responsible for higher education and research. Institutions are however free to structure courses and programmes according to their own needs, but using a common credit compatible with ECTS.
