Levels and degrees
Higher education in Sweden is subdivided into three levels, or cycles: first cycle, second cycle and third cycle. When you meet all the requirements for a degree at one of the three levels, you can apply for one. The title of the degree will depend on the courses included and their progressive specialisation.
Admission to each cycle generally requires the successful completion of the lower levels. The student must have completed a bachelor’s degree at the first cycle before being admitted to a programme at the second cycle. For admission to the third cycle the student must have completed at least a master degree (60 credits) at the second cycle level.
To obtain a degree the student must have completed a degree project. For the bachelor’s degree and the master’s 60 credits degree the requirement is a degree project of 15 ECTS credits. For the 120 credits master’s degree the requirement is a project of 30 ECTS credits.
