Visit by Joann Peck, University of Wisconsin-Madison
2018-05-22This week is Joann Peck, Associate professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison, visiting CTF. She is one of our Ander Visiting Professors, and is visiting CTF to meet with the researchers and to work on a joint research project on interpersonal touch.
"I am thrilled to be an Ander Visiting Professor at CTF! My research aligns with services and I appreciate the faculty and staff interest in research at Karlstad University", says Joann Peck.
Joann Peck is currently working on a project with CTF-Professor Anders Gustafsson and Andrea Luangrath, Assistant professor of Marketing at University of Iowa.
"Our work examines initiating interpersonal touch. Previous research has detailed all the positive effects on people who receive ta light touch on the arm between the shoulder and the elbow. However, we are looking at the person who initiates the touch, the salesperson. In one study, data was collected in Sweden during six different national meetings for salespeople. These 97 salespeople told us if and how they use touch as an effective sales tool. Our paper delves deeper in to how, why and when salespeople initiate touch. And I am happy to report that we are putting the final finishes on this research to resubmit our paper to the Journal of Consumer Research", says Joann Peck.
Joann Peck is an Associate Professor in the Marketing Department and the Associate Dean of the undergraduate program at the Wisconsin School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her primary research focus is on haptics (the sense of touch) and consumer behavior. She started off working on product touch and specifically the individual differences in motivation to touch, product category differences and situations that either encouraged or discouraged pre-purchase touch by consumers. Her most recent project focuses on interpersonal touch and examines comfort with both initiating and receiving touch. Her research has been published in the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Psychology, the Journal of Business Research, and the Journal of Retailing. Joann Peck’s research has been cited in Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Time.com, the Canadian Broadcast Company and others.
The Ander visiting professorship is funded by Anne-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation for Media Research. The professorship provide grants to cover the cost of five visiting professors, including Joann Peck, at CTF during the next three years.
