Order academic insignia
The academic insignia hail from the Middle Ages, and include the doctor’s hat, doctor’s ring, and earlier also a book of privileges, which had disappeared from the ceremonies and had been replaced by the diploma. The handshake has symbolic value; it means ‘be greeted’, and the promotor also says these words during the act. The insignia are proof that a doctoral degree has been conferred. Conferred doctors are entitled to wearing a hat, but at Karlstad University a laurel wreath is used as a symbol for the conferment of the degree in accordance with Swedish tradition. They also receive a diploma. How ever, if conferred doctors also wish to wear a hat and a ring it is possible to order it separate.
Doctoral ring
The gold doctor’s ring signifies that the wearer of the ring has ‘entered into marriage’ with science. Only those who had their doctor’s degrees conferred at Karlstad University are allowed to wear this ring. Unfortunately, the price for gold has risen sharply in the last year.
Ordering a Doctoral Ring
The doctoral ring is ordered through our supplier, Sporrong. It is priced per unit based on the selected size and choice of white gold or red gold. Ring sizing is best done by a local jeweler. Sporrong will provide a quote for the selected ring according to the specified size and the current gold price.
The manufacturing time is between 5–6 weeks from the date of order. The final date for placing an order is February 5 to guarantee delivery in week 14, one week before the Academic Ceremony.

The ring will then be sent to your home address by cash on delivery. The ring is engraved with your name and the date of the conferment ceremony, for example: F. Surname, 2024-10-18.

Laurel wreath
During the ceremony and conferment, the new doctorate is awarded a laurel wreath because the university primarily confers the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, although Doctors of Technology or Economics are also awarded laurel wreaths. We need your head measurement to order a laurel wreath that fits. If the measurement is taken with a tape measure, it is important to place the bottom edge of the tape measure at the top of the eyebrows and measure horizontally around the head.
The order for the laurel wreath and the measurement should be made through the registration form for Academic Celebration. The link will be opened in connection with the official invitation being sent out by post in mid-June.
