Due to the ongoing pandemic, university management has decided that the graduation ceremony 2020 will be held digitally. This means that no graduation ceremony will take place on site at the university. Prior to the decision, the university has completed a risk analysis where several factors were taken into account, including that the celebration may include close contact between the participants and that many of them come from other parts of the country with different risk levels.
Of course, we will ensure that our students are celebrated and receive a personal and grand send-off as they graduate from Karlstad University!
The digital ceremonies will include speeches from university representatives, music and graduates being presented individually by name.
Karlstad University finds it sad that we will not be able to host the graduation ceremony on site. We apologise to all of you who have been looking forward to coming here for the ceremony. Unfortunately, these are unusual times and we must act in accordance with the Public Health Agency’s recommendations to avoid an increased spread of infection.
FAQ:
- Why cannot the university organise more but smaller graduation ceremonies for up to 50 people, so that we can still receive our glass apple on site at the university?
Answer: In the university’s risk analysis, we have taken into account that there is a high risk that the event will include close contact between the participants, that there may be people belonging to risk groups present, that the event will take place indoors and that many participants will come from other parts of the country with a higher risk level than in the region. Overall, this means that a graduation ceremony on site present too high of a risk – even if we were to divide it into smaller ceremonies with groups of a maximum of 50 people.
- How come the Scholastic Aptitude Test can be held on site and not the graduation ceremony?
Answer: There are other conditions surrounding the Scholastic Aptitude Test, for example, that people will have allocated seats and will not move around as much. Nor does the Scholastic Aptitude Test include invited guests.
- Soon, gatherings of up to 500 people will be allowed in connection with certain events. Why does this not apply to Kau?
Answer: Currently, there is no such decision and the university needed to make a decision about the graduation ceremony as it is a big event to organise. For example, we need to notify students, subcontractors, Karlstad Municipality and others who are involved. Nor is it appropriate based on the risk of infection (see previous answer about the limit of 50 people).
- I want to be able to attend a physical ceremony at a later date and would like to cancel my registration.
Answer: We do not know how long the restrictions and the corona pandemic will last. Therefore, we cannot offer you to attend to a graduation ceremony at a later date as we do not know when graduation ceremonies can be held on site at the university again.
For questions, contact Conference and Events by e-mail: examenshogtid@kau.se
Cancelled travel plans
If you need to cancel travel reservations, i.e. tickets, hotels etc., in connection to the ceremony, contact the provider with which you made the reservation. Karlstad University is not responsible for any financial losses that occur due to cancelled events.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT GRADUATION CEREMONY, AND FAQ (when the ceremony is organized at site)
GUESTS
Each student may bring three guests at the most to this event since the number of seats is limited. State the number of guests on the registration form. The limitation of number of guests allowed is to ensure that as many students as possible will have the opportunity to attend and to bring guests.
Requirements for attending the graduation ceremony are that
- the student has signed up for the ceremony via a link on this web page no later than the last day for registration, which will be shown in the invitation.
- the student has applied for a degree certificate before last day of registration and meets the degree requirements. It is, however, not a requirement that the certificate has been issued.
Students who have signed up but realise during the winter, for instance, that they will not be able to meet the degree requirements can cancel their registration for the ceremony and may then attend a graduation ceremony at a later date.
After last day of registration, the degree officer at the Office for Student Affairs makes sure that all students who have signed up for the ceremony meet the requirements by checking that students who have not yet been issued a degree certificate meet the requirements for the degree requested. Students who fail to meet the requirements in time are welcome to attend a later ceremony when requirements are met.
Day of the Ceremony
The doors to the Aula Magna hall are opened 30 minutes before time, and students and guests should preferably be seated about 20 minutes before the start of the event.
Students are assigned reserved seats in the front rows of the hall and accompanying guests are seated further back in the hall. Staff members will show students and guests to their seats.
During the ceremony, students being awarded the same or equivalent degree are called to the stage by name in alphabetical order. They receive a gift (a glass apple) for graduating from Karlstad University and for attending the ceremony. The ceremony is framed by speeches and music performances.
Attendance is free of charge. The glass apple is only presented to students attending the ceremony. The event takes around 60–70 minutes.
After the ceremony, students and their guests are invited to a 20 to 40-minute coffee and cake mingle in Transforum, courtesy of Karlstad Municipality and Karlstad University. Please state any allergies on the registration form.

”May I bring more than three guests?”
- Before the last day of registration, we cannot answer this question. The graduation events in the autumn are usually fully booked and bringing more guests than three is probably not possible. Contact us after 8 September for a definite answer.
”I would love to have the glass apple, but I won't/can't attend the graduation ceremony. Can you send me a glass apple?”
- Regrettably not. The glass apple is a symbolic ceremonial gift, only presented during the ceremony. It is not linked to graduating from Karlstad University but to attending the graduation ceremony at Karlstad University.
”One of my guests is disabled. Can a seat/place be reserved for this guest”?
- Yes, this can be arranged. When you fill in the registration form, state in the box "Övrigt" that a guest is disabled and we will reserve a seat/place. We will notify you via e-mail a week before the event about the reservations made for your guest/s.
”Will I be seated next to my fellow-students in the hall”?
- Students are assigned reserved seats (by name in alphabetical order) in the front rows of the hall to facilitate a smooth transition in groups to the stage when names are called and glass apples received. This means that Bachelor degree students may be seated with students who are majoring in different subjects. E.g. Bachelor of Science in Engineering students are seated together in alphabetical order. There are opportunities to socialise with your fellow-students before and after the event.
”May I bring a pram into the hall?”
- Unfortunately, fire safety regulations do not allow prams in the hall. There is an attended cloakroom outside the hall for the pram, and the baby can be brought into the hall and placed on your lap. We recommend that you find end row seats if children are with you.
