The migration map is a familiar cartographic genre showing flows of human bodies converging on Europe across land and water. Behind the proliferation of such maps lies a profound tension about what it means to be European and how demographic change affects European integrity. Viewed as cartographic performances, this cartographic practice reveals above all a deep-seated ambivalence about integrity. On the one
hand, integrity implies solid territorial containment and clear distinctions between Us and Them. On the other hand, integrity is about remaining true to ideals of human rights which offer no room for distinctions between Us and Them. The talk traces this ambivalence across a range of different maps.
