Memories and Stories
Stephen Goss’s music invites verbal thought. He sees his role as a composer similar to that of a storyteller, and much of his music is narrative driven. In this lecture, he will discuss various works from his recent album ‘Landscape and Memory’, to illustrate his close relationship with the written word.

Literary Text as Expressive Device
- as seen through the life and works of Catharina Pratten (1824-1895)
My practice-led research is centred around Catharina Pratten’s ‘Guitar School’ (1859) and explores if, and how, such a method can be used to revitalise the interpretation of 19th century guitar repertoire.
In this presentation I intend to explore the literary aspect of Pratten’s life and work. This includes both her written musical instructions as well as the poetic descriptions of the instrument seen in the ‘Guitar School’. The exploration of literary text in this context raises further questions as to its potential of playing an active part in musical interpretation and performance.

The process of interpretation through literary text
Pedagogical approaches to more conscious artistic processes of interpretation finding
In my research, I explore how, as an interpreter of Western art music, I can raise awareness of the interpretation process of a musical piece by exploring metaphorical concepts found in literature.
In my presentation, I will share my background, my journey in the art world, and the inspiration behind my research. I will also provide insights into some of my key projects.
