Preferential Right to Re-employment
There are two types of preferential rights under Swedish employment legislation: the preferential right to re-employment and the preferential right to a higher rate of employment (increased working hours). This page provides information about the preferential right to re-employment and explains how to submit a claim to exercise this right.
Preferential Right to Re-employment
If your fixed-term employment has ended, or if you have been made redundant, you may be entitled to preferential right to re-employment under the Swedish Employment Protection Act (LAS). If this applies to you, you will have been informed of this in writing by your employer.
If you wish to exercise your preferential right to re-employment, you must submit a claim to the University.
What does the Preferential Right to Re-employment mean?
If you submit a claim for a preferential right to re-employment, we will contact you if a vacancy becomes available that may be relevant to you. This applies to vacancies for which you have sufficient qualifications and which fall within the scope of your claim.
To enable us to assess your qualifications against the requirements of the position, you will need to submit a complete application if you are interested in the vacancy. You will be considered for the position alongside all other applicants applying for vacancies at Karlstad University.
For how long does the Preferential Right to Re-employment apply?
Provided that you have submitted a claim for preferential right to re-employment, the right applies from:
- the date notice of dismissal is given, in the case of permanent employment; or
- the date you are informed that your fixed-term employment will end.
The preferential right to re-employment then remains in effect until nine months have passed since the date on which your employment ended.
Please note that the preferential right to re-employment ceases if you decline a reasonable offer of employment or if you obtain a new position at Karlstad University.
Submit a claim for Preferential Right to Re-employment
If you wish to submit a claim for preferential right to re-employment, you do it online through the Varbi recruitment system using the link below.
If you do not already have a user account, please create one using a personal email address, not the kau-email. This helps ensure that you can continue to access the system after your employment has ended, as your Karlstad University email account will normally be deactivated at that time.
If you wish to amend or withdraw your claim, you can do so using the same link.
