Frequently asked questions after your studies
To help you with answers to the most common questions, we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions and answers. If you cannot find the answer to your question, you can contact the study and career guidance at Karlstad University.
1. How do I apply for a degree?
When you have completed your program or your independent courses, it is time to apply for a degree. It will not come automatically when you consider yourself finished, but you must actively apply for your degree yourself. If you have completed a program and do not know which degree to apply for, you will find it in the educational plan for the program you have completed. A course can have a different number of credits, one can be 30 credits and another 7.5 credits.
2. What is the graduation ceremony?
The graduation ceremony is part of our Academic Celebration and takes place twice a year.
During the ceremony, you will be able to go up on stage together with others who have received the same or similar degree and you will receive a gift for graduating from Karlstad University when we read out your name. The ceremony will be accompanied by speeches and music.
We would be very pleased if you would like to attend this ceremony. Your formal diploma will be sent to you from the university's degree unit after you have applied for it.
3. What is the difference between a general degree and a professional degree?
A general degree is not as specific as a vocational degree. It is more general and not as detailed in terms of the content of courses in the degree. For you, this means that you can put together different independent courses and take a general degree, but you can also take a general degree after studying one of our programs.
Many of our programs lead to a general degree, for example IT Design, Human Resources and Working Life, International Business, Information and PR. Examples of general degrees are Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees and Master's degrees.
A vocational degree is a form of degree for education that leads to specific professions. The requirements for vocational degrees are more detailed in their content compared to a general degree. To study towards a vocational degree, it is usually required that you have studied a program that leads to a vocational degree and follow the program's curriculum. Vocational degrees have different forms of credentialing or eligibility requirements.
