Sustainable materials

Modern product development in the biobased sector relies heavily on knowledge of the fiber and appropriate modification of the fiber structure. In this focus area, the combination of laboratory research and scale-up to near industrial conditions or customer/consumer interactions is a major challenge. Therefore, collaboration between academic research groups, production facilities and test beds is necessary to establish the connections that would ensure the successful implementation of research results ― an approach that EXACT embodies.
Key challenges:
- Create high-value products by utilizing cellulose fiber materials as a replacement or complementary material to fossil-based polymer materials.
- Enable efficient and profitable recycling of cellulose fiber-based products, including separation of fossil polymer components.
- Optimize efficient use of water in the materials and forest industry's highly energy-intensive and water-consuming processes.
- Introduce innovative lignocellulosic materials in replacement processes, in medical and energy-related applications.
