Hello there, Felicia Öberg – new PhD student in Industrial Engineering and Management
2025-10-02Welcome as a PhD student in Industrial Engineering and Management! What will you be researching?
– Thank you! My research will focus on AI, idea management, and gender equality, with a particular interest in how AI can be used to improve efficiency in the early stages of the innovation process.
You were previously a student at Karlstad University – can you tell us a little about your background?
– I moved from Arboga to Karlstad in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, to study Industrial Engineering and Management. During my studies, I also completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science and got involved in everything from the university’s Formula Student team to serving as chair of the student council for the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, as well as project manager for IN-dagen – a career fair for students in science and engineering. I have worked both in customer service and as a programmer, and I am currently a board member of a newly founded foundation. It’s really been a mix of high and low – which may also be why this PhD position feels so exciting.
What made you apply for the PhD position?
– Above all, the subject itself. When I wrote my master’s thesis in this area, I realized how much I enjoyed it and how many opportunities a PhD could open up. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn and to dive deeper. My time as a student at Karlstad University was a lot of fun, and I hope my doctoral studies will bring the same sense of curiosity and discovery.
What do you hope your research will contribute?
– Even though I don’t yet know exactly where my research will lead, I hope it can provide companies and organizations with tools that make the innovation process both more efficient and more inclusive. If my work can contribute to more equal and creative processes, that would be a valuable outcome.
And finally – what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
– I like having something creative alongside my research, such as working with flowers or knitting. Right now, I’m knitting a sweater using a new braiding technique I’ve never tried before. I really enjoy learning new things – even if my sister thinks I probably have the world’s nerdiest hobbies.
