- Monterrey Tech, which is considered to be one of the top universities in South America, has well-developed
collaboration with other universities, companies and organizations. The most important one is Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT in Boston, USA. When I met with the Assistant Vice-Chancellor in charge of research it became clear how important collaboration at this level is. It’s not enough that the universities have contracts with each other for collaboration. The contracts must be given content by researchers in focused areas and with clear and common goals to work together and to get companies or other organizations involved in these collaborations. Monterrey Tech is now making a major effort to develop their research by creating a number of strategic research environments with close connections to various educational programs. These groupings will tackle key societal challenges, develop collaboration and relations with businesses and other organizations, and also to develop collaboration with researchers and research groups at other institutions internationally. High quality research and publications in highly ranked scientific journals will contribute to the development of the university. It is not only research that is in focus, but also the link between research and the development of various courses. By doing so it becomes attractive for companies and other external stakeholders to interact with Monterrey Tech. They choose to interact with companies that have strategic importance; the benefit to the university is central. If you don’t contribute, you are not a valuable partner in the long run. This involves both giving and receiving. Perhaps fewer and deeper collaborations are preferred to many and superficial. What can we learn? How can Karlstad University develop value creating collaborations and become an even more important player in the innovation system?
