CSR - a new research centre at Karlstad university
Karlstad university has been at the forefront in climate- and public-related safety research for many years. In a dynamically changing society, however, risk and safety issues need to be seen in a larger context. As such, to enable larger research projects and further develop international collaborations, the former Centre for Climate and Safety, CCS and Centre for Public Safety, CPS now merges into a new centre: the Centre for Societal Risk Research, CSR.
In a changing society, not least exemplified by the ongoing Corona pandemic, risk and safety issues are increasingly complex and require multi- and trans-disciplinary research. No longer can these issues be seen as isolated and subject-specific. Rather, they require knowledge and competences from the natural sciences, social sciences, the humanities as well as medicine.
- With over ten years experience of successful research and collaboration we are in an ideal position to advance within this area, says Mikael Granberg, one of two directors of CSR.
Although the two previous focus of climate and public safety will remain, CSR will expand the focus to include the larger understanding and management of societal risks. As was the case with both CCS and CPS, a central strategy to CSR will be in linking research to practice.
- Our research revolves around causes to, and consequences of, societal risks. In other words, the relationship between threats to society, society's vulnerability and society's capacity to handle these risks, says Finn Nilson, also director of CSR. This complex relationship is why we need to utilise multi-disciplinary knowledge on societal risks, risk management, societal planning and governance.
