Bestoun S. Ahmed Al-Beywanee, Professor of Computer Science
Bestoun S. Ahmed Al-Beywanee is originally from Iraq and was born in 1982. He has a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Science from 2004 and got a scholarship to finish his master's study at University Putra Malaysia 2007-2009.
After his master degree Bestoun S. Ahmed Al-Beywanee moved on to a Ph.D. fellowship position at the University of Science Malaysia (2009-2012) in the field of Software engineering. These both universities are ranked first and second respectively in Malaysia and are among the 300 top world university ranking. In 2012 Bestoun S. Ahmed Al-Beywanee joined Salahaddin Univeristy in Iraq as a lecturer and then he promoted to Associate professor in 2015. He then obtained a grant to finish his project as a postdoctoral researcher in the prestigious Swiss AI lab (IDSIA) in Lugano, Switzerland during 2015 and 2016. He later joined Czech Technical University in Prague in 2016 as an assistant professor in which he was also leading the STILL lab and appointed as Red Had software engineering chair. Since 2007, he has also been working in the field of Software Engineering.
“I have experience in teaching and interdisciplinary research in both academia and research centers, where my collaborative work as a researcher in the intersection of software engineering and AI topics resulted in several publications in top journals and conferences. I also have several years of industrial experience through my work as an engineer and then research collaborator with different industrial partners.”
In 2019 Bestoun S. Ahmed Al-Beywanee moved to Karlstad University as a senior lecturer to work with the research group SQuaD, Software quality and digital modernisation. Eventually he was promoted to Associate Professor, Docent and then employed as Professor in March 2023.
Overall, his research encompasses a broad range of topics within Quality Assurance, including machine learning systems, software testing methodologies, Trustworthy AI, test generation algorithms, IoT systems, and applied soft computing. He specializes in Quality Assurance (QA), focusing on machine learning, AI, and data-driven systems. He is particularly interested in ensuring the quality and reliability of these systems through various testing methodologies and techniques.
“The primary motivation behind my research is to address the challenges and risks associated with these advanced systems. I aim to mitigate potential issues around quality, such as software bugs, algorithmic biases, and inadequate system performance. Overall, my research in these areas is important because it directly contributes to the development of robust, reliable, and trustworthy systems.”
Bestoun S. Ahmed Al-Beywanee plan to continue advancing the field of Quality Assurance with a particular focus on emerging technologies and their applications. He aims to delve deeper into the quality assurance challenges posed by evolving machine learning and AI systems, exploring novel testing methodologies and techniques to ensure their reliability, fairness, and transparency.
“Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the development of robust and reliable technologies that positively impact society while fostering the responsible use of emerging technologies.”
