For those to be conferred
We receive information from the faculties regarding who is to be invited to our Academic Ceremony, and the cut-off date for the next ceremony is December 1, 2026. This means that you must have defended your thesis no later than December 1 and have applied for your degree.
In October, we will send a letter to those who have defended or will defend their thesis before December 1, containing more specific information about the Academic Ceremony.
Ordering information for insignia such as the doctoral hat and doctoral ring will be available in connection with the letter sent out in October 2026. However, if you happen to be near our hat maker in Gothenburg or our partner in Stockholm who takes precise hat measurements, you are of course welcome to visit them.
More information about the doctoral hat can be found on our hat maker’s website.
For those to be installed
We receive information from the faculties about who will be installed or appointed as an adjunct professor, and you will receive a letter in October with information about what is expected of you as a new professor in connection with the Academic Ceremony.
During the ceremony, you will be presented and receive a diploma from the Vice-Chancellor. As a new professor, you are expected to participate in an open ceremonial lecture during the morning of the ceremony day, giving a short presentation of your research—an occasion in which all professors take part. The lecture concludes with a discussion with honorary doctors.
You will also be interviewed for a short presentation in our Academic Ceremony booklet, which is produced ahead of the event.
Dress code – formal attire
The dress code for the Academic Ceremony at Karlstad University is formal attire (white tie). For men, the dress code is white tie and tails; for women, a long, full-length evening gown of festive style, or national costume.
If you already have questions regarding the dress code, we have produced a video about white tie attire. Information about attire for women or anyone wishing to wear a gown will be published shortly.
