Computer science to meet the challenges of the future
Ensuring that we are digitally equipped for the future is one of the biggest research challenges. Standards are high and development is moving rapidly. Research in computer science at Karlstad University is focused on meeting and mastering the demands of digitalisation.

Current research is conducted within thee strategically selected main fields of study, distributed systems and communications, privacy and security, and software quality.
- We thought carefully when creating our focus areas, says Anna Brunsröm, Professor in Computer Science. They support each other, overlap and interact while being independent.
Broad research approach
The research conducted has a broad approach, creating a solid foundation to build on, for excellent research that drives progress. To achieve their goals and take their research findings to the next level, the discipline of computer science at Karlstad University now welcome an associate senior lecturer to join their team. The hope is that the successful candidate will contribute with expertise and new perspectives that complement the already existing research group.
- We value someone with experience of working with big data, says Anna Brunström. Someone who wants to be involved in managing and analysing data, and creating data-driven services and digital solutions according to current and future needs.
Close collaboration with companies
In order to ensure that the research conducted has real relevance, there is close collaboration with well-established companies. This means that the discipline has constant and close access to input from the real world, which increases both the quality and impact of the research. There is also input from regional, national and international contacts. The strong research is an important aspect when it comes to education in the subject, as it ensures that the next generation of computer scientists are up to date with the latest technology.
The future of computer science is bright. Society is becoming increasingly more dependent on technology, which means that the subject of computer science has importance for the future. To ensure that our coming needs are met, there is a large group of researchers working within the field. Having a large group of researchers is an advantage according to Anna Brunström.
- We have a variety of backgrounds and complement each other well, she says. Knowledge is a common denominator and together we have a wide network of external collaborators.
With these aspects in mind, the team tackles the task of meeting the digital demands and challenges of the future.
