Step 2: EU - Horizon Europe
All Horizon Europe projects must be signed by the Vice-Chancellor, regardless of the budget amount. The reason for this is that there is a mutual dependence and responsibility between the partners for all work packages. As a result, all partners can risk being financially affected if a party fails to achieve satisfactory results in their commitment. This also applies when the own part of the project is small in relation to the whole.

Karlstad University's Horizon Europe Initiative 2026–2029
Karlstad University is strengthening its engagement in Horizon Europe, the EU's research and innovation programme. The initiative aims to increase the university's participation in European research projects through targeted support measures, capacity building, networking opportunities, and incentives for researchers.
The goal is to enable more researchers to take on leading roles in EU projects, develop international collaborations, and increase the university's external research funding.
