Obtaining Insurances
When you move to Sweden there are a several types of insurances you need to be aware, as well as some you way wish to consider obtaining.
Karlstad University and State insurances
Karlstad University has an Insurance for Foreign Visitors (Swe: Försäkring för utländska besökare) for people from countries that do not have medical insurance agreements with Sweden. The insurance covers individuals staying for a short period (less than one year).
Karlstad University does not provide a general health insurance, but if you are employed in Sweden for more than one year, you can and should ensure that you are registered in the Swedish social insurance system through the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). Sweden has a very comprehensive social insurance system, but dental and eye care services are normally not included in the standard coverage mentioned above
Karlstad University also has several other insurance policies for employees, including insurance for business travel and work-related injuries which covers injuries at work, as well as accidents occurring on your way to or from work. If you wish, you can supplement these with private health insurance. You can read about our insurances on the university’s intranet, Inslaget, once your employment has begun and you have received access.
Private Insurances to consider
When relocating, there are a few private insurances that most residents choose to have;
Household insurance
In Sweden, you are not obligated by law to have household insurance. However, most landlords require tenants to have one, we strongly recommend obtaining one regardless of the type of accommodation you choose.
Unemployment insurance (A-kassa)
Roughly around 80 % of the working population in Sweden is a member of an unemployment insurance fund (known as "A-kassa"). There are over 20 different unemployment insurance funds in Sweden – so it is important to choose the insurance fund that matches your profession and personal circumstances. Membership usually involves a small monthly fee, and it provides compensation based on a percentage of your former salary for a limited period of time if you become unemployed and meet the qualifying conditions.
