Leonardo Martucci, professor of Computer Science
Leonardo Martucci is an electrical engineer. He holds a five-year degree in electrical engineering and a two-year master's in the same field from the University of São Paulo. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at Karlstad University, followed by postdoctoral appointments at TU Darmstadt, Germany, and Linköping University. He returned to Karlstad University in 2013 and have been committed to the institution ever since.
“Cybersecurity never stands still, and its puzzles drew me in. I work to help build systems people can trust by improving the usability of security tools, advancing privacy-preserving technologies, and strengthening cybersecurity education.”
Leonardo Martucci’s research helps system administrators write secure and usable configuration rules and has challenged misconceptions about how computer administrators interact with security systems.
“Our cyber range, launched in 2025, is being piloted by universities in Sweden and abroad. Cybersecurity is inherently interdisciplinary. I align privacy-preserving technologies with data-protection law, collaborate with psychologists on usable security and human decision-making, and work with information-systems colleagues to translate societal needs into curricula and exercises.
Leonardo Martucci says that trust runs through his research, from computational trust to ideas like trust anchors and trust management.
“These technical notions are mirrors of human attitudes. To me, trust is both assurance and expectation: the belief that we can rely on one another because we care about shared goals. Therefore, what I most want to highlight from my career are the people. I've had excellent mentors, amazing students, and talented colleagues and project partners. They have shaped my research and who I am. I am grateful and feel very lucky.
Outside the cyber world Leonardo Martucci have been kayaking for 35 years and plan to keep at it for at least 35 more. Being on the water keeps him balanced, patient, and humbled by beautiful nature.
