The Centre for Public Safety (CPS) is a research center at Karlstad University, Sweden, that specializes in the areas of injury prevention and epidemiology. CPS, which was formally instituted in 2013, aims to provide a strong and broad evidence base for policymakers and safety professionals by bridging the gap between different societal sectors and sub-fields of injury research.
Accidents and injuries represent a leading threat to life, health and well-being, worldwide. While preventative responsibilities are usually strongly sector-divided from a societal perspective, we believe that the scientific platform for accident and injury prevention is universal. The idea behind CPS is therefore to offer a synthesized, scientific evidence base for the broad research field through a combination of perspectives from medical, social and behavioral sciences. The broadness of our scope is what makes CPS unique.
CPS is characterized by all aspects of research in injury epidemiology and risk management, from studies of the burden of injuries and their risk factors, to the evaluation of public policy interventions. Internally, we collaborate with a wide range of researchers from different divisions, including Public Health, Environmental Science, Nursing, Psychology and Economics. The focal point is the Division of Risk Management, where the Centre’s secretariat is located. Externally, CPS interacts with a large number of agencies, companies and organizations at all levels of society, as well as with research groups at other universities.
