Literary theory and methodology

Instruction is in the form of mandatory lectures, seminars and individual readings.
Doctoral students are expected to actively participate in all activities.

Course goals
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

• give an account of the development of literary theory and methodology in relation to epistemological premises,
• independently assess the relevance of theories/methods to various research fields and critically analyse published applications of these,
• independently analyse literature based on a considered application of the literary theories and methods treated in the course,
• evaluate and apply appropriate theories for their own research project.

Prerequisites
The course is primarily aimed at students admitted to a doctoral programme in English and Comparative Literature, but can also be relevant to doctoral students in related disciplines.

Examination
Assessment is based on seminar contributions and individually designed written assignment related to issues treated in the course. One of the grades Pass or Fail is awarded in the examination.
