Making Digital Health Inclusive: On gender, class, ethnicity and health
In 2019, WHO published the report The Future of Digital Health Systems in EU, in which social justice and inclusion were mentioned as some of the challenges of digital health. In line with this report, in 2019, innovation company Compare in Karlstad, Sweden, launched the multi-actor project Digital Well Arena to improve health in Värmland by digital means. Our research team joined the project to research the potentials and challenges for creating an inclusive digital health-care system from a gender equality and diversity perspective.
In this presentation we share snippets of our pilot study that focuses on three user groups and their experiences of getting access to health-care by digital means; trans and non-binary individuals, immigrant women, and working-class cis-gender men from Sweden without an immigrant background. We aim to present how the intersecting social variables (gender, class and ethnicity) can potentially affect particular groups’ access to health care and the quality of care they receive within a digitalized healthcare system.
