I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Research on Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CFBUPH) at Karlstad University. Our vision at the CFBUPH is to contribute to improving mental health and wellbeing of young people through excellent and interdisciplinary research focused on broader social and economic living conditions. CFBUPH is mainly funded by external grants.
The core of my research is to understand how the broader social and economic environment, stress and mental health in the youth are interconnected. I have recently extended this to investigate time trends of these factors. My research is increasingly focused on underlying mechanisms of developmental problems in youth, and in particular, stress as such an underlying mechanism. I am interested in different aspects of stress, measured subjectively (perceived stress) and objectively (biological stress system function). In my research, I strive to understand the association between stress and mental health, and how this association is influenced by social and economic living conditions.
I received my MSc in Clinical and Biological Psychology from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2009. In my doctoral work, completed in 2013 at the VU University in Amsterdam, I focused on biological stress reactivity as a vulnerability marker for substance use disorders, demonstrating that youth who are at risk for developing addictions later in life show blunted stress reactivity.
In 2013-2015 I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the VU University in Amsterdam, focusing on the development of stress sensitivity in youth. I then received a fellowship from the Behavioral Science Institute of Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands in 2015-2017 to set up and conduct the Urbanicity and Stress Project in order to study urbanicity, biological stress system functioning and mental health in youth.
