Education in intervention surgery in a hybrid room
15.0 ECTS creditsThe course comprises Care, 5.5 ECTS credits, and Medical Science, 9.5 ECTS credits.
Instruction is in the form of lectures, literature study, seminars, and 6 weeks of clinical placement (VFU). The course is offered as contract education.
The course combines theory and practice. Lectures are given on topographic anatomy, pathophysiology in vascular surgery, and operation methodology in intervention surgery. Risk assessment of acute and late complications related to intervention surgery. Responsibility for preventing postoperative infections and the importance of sterility are introduced in a lecture on microbiology and hygiene, and put into practice clinically during the clinical placement (VFU). A lecture on medical technology is focused on aspects of handling and responsibility in relation to testing the function of existing medical technology equipment, and the acquisition of knowledge about ways to prevent radiation in intervention surgery.
Students practise skills such as carrying out preoperative hand desinfection, donning a sterile gown and gloves, and positioning the patient on the operating table, and are introduced to suture materials and instrumentation technology used in intervention surgery. Students reflect upon an ethical approach when encountering patients and collaborating with colleagues in the surgical team in a hybrid room. Take part of recorded material on vascular surgery, ethics, which is available on the learning platform. Students learn how to prepare patients and materials preoperatively, practise intraoperative instrumentation and assistance, prepare for being responsible for the well-being of patients, and learn how to document completed care postoperatively as well as making sure that the patient is handling over to another caregiver.
