15.0 ECTS creditsThe course comprises three modules with the following components:
Module 1: Quantum Chemistry (6 ECTS cr)
Introduction to quantum mechanics from a chemical perspective with a special emphasis on a number of basic models of the energy of atoms and molecules and chemical bonds in simple systems.
Module 2: Foundational Chemical Thermodynamics (6 ECTS cr)
Learning outcome 1: Heat, work, ideal gas law, heat capacity, internal energy, enthalpy, Hess' law, Kirchhoff´s law, entropy and Gibb's energy.
Learning outcome 2: The first, second and third laws of thermodynamics, isochoric process, isobaric process, isothermic process, adiabatic process and standard states.
Learning outcome 3: Phase equilibrium, Clausius Clapeyron's equation, phase diagram, triple point, redox reactions, galvanic element, Nernst's equation.
Learning outcome 4: Ideal and non-ideal solution, Raoult's law, Henry's law, chemical potential, freezing point reduction, boiling point rise, ionic strength, Debye Hückel's law, Güntelberg's approximation formula.
Learning outcome 5: chemical equilibrium, law of mass action, van´t Hoff''s equation, bio-related equilibrium, weak acid and weak bases, pH, buffert solutions, Nernst's equation, Clausius Clapeyron's equation, Raoult's law, Henry's law, Debye Hückel's lag, Güntelberg's approximation formula.
Learning outcome 6: Macromolecules, configuration, conformation, structure, average number, average weight, polydispersity index.
Learning outcome 7: Theory is applied to practical laboratory tasks, which vary from course to course. Laboratory tasks are announced at the start of the course.
Module 3, Chemistry Education (3 ECTS cr)
Secondary school students' areas of difficulty in chemistry, theory, and practical application are treated as well as assessment, evaluation and follow-up from a subject teaching perspective.
