Most of the discussion is in Swedish, but English will also be spoken!
16 September 2022 marks the tragic death of Mahsa Zhina Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was killed while in the custody of the Iranian morality police. Zhina’s death ignited a series of anti-regime protests across cities in Iran and globally. While the protest known by the famous slogan Zan, Zendigi, Azadi (Woman, life, freedom) and are discussed as a feminist movement, the intersectional characteristics of the movement such as ethnic minorities or LQBTQ+ community’s role and presence are less discussed.
Simultaneously, Iranian diaspora and their allies have been pushing their respective governments and international organizations to take action in support of the protests that makes the protests a transnational phenomenon. In this panel, we aim to discuss such intersectional and transnational complexity as well as possibilities and challenges for an ethical response and political action in support of the protests within the Swedish context.
Our panelists are Katayoun Keshavarzi (activist and writer), Hakan Svenneling (MP for the left party), and Tara Mehrabi (gender studies researcher). The event is open to public and free to attend.
We will get back to you if the event is possible to have online!
